    1. "Dear stranger, dear anger, dear fantasies of justice, please ferry us to the lake where the stories are clear." -from the poem 'Fist and After, El Cinzano'Dostoevsky has provided the enduring idea that it is by observing a society's prisons that one can most richly decide on that society's progress; many admirable riffs on the moral notion of 'What you do unto the least' appear in some form or another in most cultures. The most striking effect of Idra Novey's newest collection is the collage of [...]

    2. As a child, adulthood looked the greater prison making me at least in one sense the perfect reader for Exit, Civilian. Idra Novey circles incarceration, only measuring out the cell when she knows its measurements.

    3. The poems, unusual in form and somewhat obscure in their content, are like small implosions that draw the reader in with a peculiar intensity.Too many enclosures make people cold, new data shows, and whenit's cold it's going to be cold. As for the spider, she's feeling for an openspace between the walls. p41

    4. Prisons are to poetry asOne can be forgiven for embarking on the language game of poetry as a freeing activity. Of course, power lines are down everywhere, and they block off a lot of turf: language is a decidedly unfree game. This makes the gambit of Exit, Civilian all the more impressively cold-concrete and tough: it's aroundabout prisons. (Jail estranging people. Oh yeah, you forget to think, this is connected to what writing was supposed to be doing all along: to say what is forbidden to be [...]

    5. I got to hear Idra Novey read her Brazilian Portueguese translations to Clarice Lispector and some original work, which caused me to buy this book. I'm so happy I did. It's a very thoughtful meditation on institutions, prisons and languages—the constructions that bind us into certain shapes. Novey's inspiration comes from her own time (past or current, I'm not sure) of teaching writer in women's correctional facilities. The language is tantalizing. The narrative is profound.Excerpt from "The L [...]

    6. These poems made me think of lace, or branches in winter just after an ice storm. These things: spare in such an elegant way, exactly right somehow. My only regret is that the book was over too soon."He wrote her letters and dropped them in wells. Once in a while one of them would shine up at him like tinfoil or an eye." (27)Favorites: "Civilian Exiting the Facilities," "Aspect," "As Charged."

    7. This book is difficult to rateere were some poems that I actually liked, but then there were other poems that were just too poetic that I didn't get them (which frustrates me to no end). All these freaking words are beautiful and everything but what the hell do they have to do with anything you're talking about. It really makes me not like poetrywhy can't you just say what you mean instead of being so obscure that the meaning flies right over my head! *sigh* Poetry just isn't my cup of tea. Desp [...]

    8. Idra's lovely and affecting poems shine a thoughtful light on the human implications of our prison problem. Her sensitivity and sensibility are brought to bear on the interactions she had as a teacher of writing to incarcerated women as well as to her observations on institutions of captivity here and abroad. This song of conscience resonates in her clarion voice.
