    1. This was tough going and it would have helped if Jones had mentioned the extensive glossary in the back somewhere other than the TOC (do you read the TOC?). This is very detail oriented and he tries to give a very exacting (within the evidence left) description of the bureaucracy, the class structure, etc. What changed when the Roman Empire declined? Why did East and West face different futures? It was interesting but be prepared to jump back and forth from the text to the glossary.

    2. Although this is a tediuous and boring book but it provides much intricate information on the ancient Rome.

    3. An old textbook, and a really solid sort of work. I really liked it when I was into this period of history at university, and one of the textbooks that I read cover-to-cover.
