    1. i read this one when i was in switzerland last week. the book was abandoned in a shelf and i brought it upstairs with me, to read it in bed. best decision ever, the poems were so simple and yet full of meaning.

    2. Piet Hien was one of the leaders of the Danish resistance during WWII. As part of their secret codes he invented these little poems called grooks. The poems are simple and perfect. My mom gave me a copy of this book and it's still one of my most treasured possessions. I am a lowly artistmolding my earthly clod.Doing my part, a little, each day by simply assisting god.Not that my effort is needed, but somehow I understandthat the lord up above has willed itthat I should have unmolded clay in my han [...]

    3. I adore this book. It covers a variety of topics, is charming in both content and illustration, and is still every bit as relevant today as it was when he wrote it. It is a wee bit short, but I know there are at least 4 other collections, so I don't really mind. I recommend it highly.

    4. Piet Hein's Grooks are timeless pinches of wisdom that never fail to make me smile and make me a little depressed that there aren't more. I wish I could afford his collected grooks books, compromising all six grook books into two volumes, but alas, they are a Danish only print book and beyond my budget. Take this awesome bit, which has been copied in movie scripts, novels and plays the world over:"Whenever you're called on to make up your mind, and you're hampered by not having any,the best way t [...]

    5. Piet Hein, one of the most important Danes of the 20th century. I found this book on my parents' bookshelves when I was a kid, and I was intrigued because the author of these aphoristic poems was also the inventor of the Soma Cube. I recently found myself thinking about the Soma Cube, and was reminded of this neat little book. The Soma Cube was this little 3-D puzzle that Parker Brothers sold a million of in the '70s, just prior to the Rubik's Cube mania. You had to assemble plastic shapes to pro [...]

    6. witty, aphoristic little poems. “A problem worthy/ of attack/ proves its worth/ by hitting back.” PH has the right balance of whimsical and thoughtful. It's easy to see why these were so popular and why they are now forgotten. They are not biting enough to be subversive and not sweet enough to be comfortable.

    7. Piet Hein is my all time favorite poet! Did you know that he also invented the elegant superellipse which is used in Danish architecture and also my favorite puzzle, the Soma Cube? I love the elegant little poems and the little illustrations that come with the Grooks. How fitting that they were used by the Resistance during WWII.

    8. With the same insight as Shel Silverstein, and a similar poetic layout complete with rhymes, Hein is the adult version (without forgetting that Silverstein was a Playboy-contributing author). He writes on sex, god and religion as well as life and philosophy, snarking at intellectuals and the dawning age of modernism. It is one of the rare books that is not only worth reading, but also keeping.

    9. I read difficult poets (Eliot, Pound, and Shakespeare), but I have a special love for these pellucid aphorisms of Piet Hein. Like Billy Collins, his work is immediate, but carries more weight with repeated reading.Although not as straight forward, I would compare this work to Sand and Foam by Kahlil Gibran, another favorite.

    10. (Abe) My introduction to short poetry when very young- Piet Hein is one of my favorite polymaths, and his grooks are elegant in their simplicity. The line drawings that accompany most are also excellent!

    11. LIVING IS- Living is a thing you do now or never- which do you? Piet HeinThe little snippets of wisdom, so well expressed, are as wonderful today as they were when I first read them more than forty years ago!

    12. Interesting little poems, and I LOVE the illustrations. Read this with Grooks 2. And now, strangely, I want to re-read Eliot's 'The Wastelands'. Huh.

    13. "Put up in a place where it's easy to see the cryptic admonishment T. T. T. When you feel how depressingly slowly you climb, it's well to remember that Things Take Time"
