    1. This was one of my parent's collection, and sitting on a shelf, it just happened to ask me to pick it up and read it. An unusual tale, recollected in later life of the strong feelings and the vague impressions that mark youth, in this case a young, studious boy, immersed in the classics and beginning to feel the stirrings of adult emotions, mingled with childish imaginations. It is strangely moving in its depictions of the tangled emotions of youth, family and friends, and one I am glad to have [...]

    3. I read this earlier in the year but I do not remember it clearly, which is rather a bad sign. As I recall, it is a story of ordinary light but so weighted with Significance that rather than rising into something luminous it sinks and becomes quite false. A pity, as there were some very nice moments here and there.

    4. This is a stunningly beautiful portrait of an inarticulate young man growing up with a sensitive and intellectual sensibility, his love of his family and friends, and his final decision to write about it in middle age. Made me laugh and cry.
